A Rare Flag Given Back To Kīngitanga

A rare 160 year old flag that has been returned to the Kīngitanga by the Anglicah Church. The flag dates back from the time of the first Maori king. The Anglican Diocese officially signed over the ownership to the Kīngitanga after forgetting they had it for almost 100 years. 

The first Maori king (Pōtatau Te Wherowhero) was the crowned in 1858. The current king recieved it from Kīngitanga at Auckland cathedral.

The flag will be welcomed back to Turangawaewae marae family next week Tainui now re-assuming their role as kaitiaki of the taonga.
